Top Ten Tuesdays: Autobuy Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Every Tuesday, participating book bloggers blog about their top ten lists.

This Week’s Topic: Top Ten Of Your Auto-buy Authors (no matter the genre or what it’s about…you’ll buy it from these authors!). If you want to get specific you can break it into genre especially since I know we did this topic in 2013.

If I’m being 100% honest, I’ve never really been the type to autobuy any books. I’m the type that only wants to own the books that I like or was really excited to read. I also don’t have the money to buy $17 hardback books as soon as they release. I’m more willing to buy slightly used discounted books from Goodwill or Half-Price Books. So this post, for me, is entirely theoretical because I’m just not that type of person! I love supporting authors but as someone with limited shelf space and is picky when it comes to what books I enjoy, I’d rather have a shelf of books I enjoy, y’know?

Anyways, if I theoretically was able to buy all the books of any author I wanted, I don’t know if I’d have that many auto-buy authors. I’m probably not going to hit 10 just because I haven’t actually read enough of various authors to have many solidified auto-buy authors. So instead of having 10 auto-buy authors, I’ll list some autobuy authors and fill the other spots with authors that I hope to explore more of!

Well besides the fact that I’ve loved nearly all of the books I’ve read from her, I’m obsessed with her world building skills. Even if I think characters aren’t her strongest point, I’m willing to read all of her books simply because of the sheer power of her world building. I didn’t really love her Archived series but I did end up finding one of my favorite book boyfriends (WESLEY AYERS!!!!). I’d buy all of her books as soon as they released if I could! I had a stroke of luck when I downloaded the preview of A Darker Shade of Magic and got the full ARC instead. It was absolute insanity because the system on Netgalley glitched. And I got to read the whole book early.

Actually, I bought A Darker Shade of Magic from a nearby indie bookstore just so I could get the signed double sided poster which is presently hanging above my tiny bookshelf. It’s majestic.

~ Sarah Dessen

I don’t think I need to justify this one. Dessen was one of the first YA contemporary authors that I ever read. I borrowed every one of her books and read them in order of publication. I think it took me about 2-3 weeks to read all of them? I don’t remember. I just loved each one! Now I’m trying to collect all of the books and it’s working out pretty well! I’ve bought  all of them secondhand for $0.50-$1. I adore her writing!

I read her novel Jellicoe Road, which is very hyped. I was extremely confused in the beginning but I actually ended up loving it! I read Saving Francesca which, in my opinion, wasn’t as good as Jellicoe Road. However, the impact of Jellicoe Road made super excited for anything she will be publishing in the future. I’m hoping to eventually buy the Aussie edition of The Piper’s Son because I think the US cover is atrocious. I will be picking up Finnikin of the Rock very soon. I’ve reviewed both Jellicoe Road and Saving Francesca. My review for Jellicoe Road was actually the first post on my blog! I’m sure it’s a horrendous review because I’ve grown a lot since then, but feel free to check it out!

Since You’ve Been Gone is one of my all time favorite books. Ever. I admit that I didn’t find Second Chance Summer to be to my liking however I still thought it was a well written novel! I’d continue to buy her books regardless of how I thought of one book because I just liked Since You’ve Been Gone that much. I started Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour and I’m already expecting it to be really great! I’ve never read anything that she’s written as Katie Finn though so that’s definitely a future goal.

I HAVE SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS AUTHOR. I’ve read two out of three of her published books. Complicit quickly made it’s way to become one of my all time favorite YA psychological thrillers. Charm & Strange is odd but still good! I actually think I should reread that one because I didn’t get the chance to appreciate it in all it’s glory. I’m super duper hyped for when I’ll get to read Delicate Monsters because I love the synopsis and I’ve heard amazing things about it.

She wrote The Diviners and Beauty Queens, both books that I have enjoyed immensely. In fact, The Diviners remains one of my all time favorite books to date. I also really want to buy the first edition hardback although at this point, I’m pretty sure it’s impossible for me to find it at a reasonable price. 😦 I want to read the sequel to The Diviners extremely badly. I still need to read her other series but even if I don’t end up liking them, I can still see myself auto-buying her other books.

POTENTIAL AUTO-BUY AUTHORS

~ Jennifer Mathieu
I read The Truth About Alice and I adored it! The cover is gorgeous and the story, while a tad bit cliche, was something that I genuinely enjoyed. I’m actually even more excited to read her book, Devoted, because it deals with religion. And books that talk about a character’s faith in a non-preachy way is literally the way to get me to read a book as soon as I get it. I’ve only read one book of her’s so I’m not sure if I’d auto-buy her books but I’m pretty confident that if I enjoy Devoted, she’ll be on the list.

~ Andrew Smith
Andrew Smith’s books have been, for the most part, hit and misses. I liked Winger a lot but I ended up finding Grasshopper Jungle a little too strange for me. I also didn’t particularly like his book, 100 Sideways Miles, all that much. The style he writes in and the stories he tell are extremely memorable, which is why he’s a good candidate for this list. The thing is that I’m not sure I enjoy his books enough to ever auto-buy him. They are so unpredictable.

~ Barry Lyga

I loved his Jasper Dent series. I Hunt Killers was fantastic. Game, it’s sequel, was just as strong as the first book. Unfortunately, I found the finale, Blood of My Blood, to be a little bit draggy. Overall, I still really enjoyed the series! I’ve also read Hero Type which was good but definitely not my favorite novel. I have yet to read any of his other novels so I’m not sure if I’d consider him an “auto-buy” author for me.

Apparently, I can’t count and I spent all this time thinking that I had ten authors when I only had nine. Oh well. I listed some of the authors that I’d probably auto-buy. I’m relatively new to the YA genre so I haven’t really read a lot of books from one particular author. I will say that Rick Riordan used to be an auto-buy author for me. However, with the conclusion of his Heroes of Olympus Series, I don’t think I’ll be following his other books. It sucks but I can’t help but feel like I wouldn’t enjoy them.
The authors on this list are all great ones that I’ve enjoyed so far! I’m pretty sure we all saw my Schwab obsession from a mile away XD
