The Reader Problems Tag

The Reader Problems TagHey guys! Today I’m going to be doing The Reader Problems Tag. I was tagged by both Summer at Xingsings and Thuong at I Read Therefore I Am. Thanks for tagging me, guys!

1. You have 20,000 books on your TBR. How in the world do you decide what to read next?

I’m gonna tell the truth on this one. Although I use Goodreads, I don’t actually pay that much attention to what I have on my To-Read shelf. I’m pretty sure 30 of the books on there are just books that got added because I was in the “maybe” mood. There’s also books that I may have thought look interesting at the time, but now don’t want to read whatsoever. I use my Goodreads to decide only when I don’t know what to read. It rarely ever happens though

I’m completely a mood reader. Unless I know I have to read a book because I have an ARC of it and want to review it before it releases, I will always pick a book based on the mood I’m in. Granted, I usually mood pick out of a stack of library books that I know I need to return soon.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you quit or are you committed?

It honestly depends on how much I hate the book. If it hate it with a burning fiery passion because of something like a really dumb character I am more likely to finish the book. Sometimes if I hate a character, I’m willing to finish the book and rate it low because I have a legitimately good reason to. But if the character is dumb enough to really annoy me to the point where I can’t stand it, I’ll DNF it. If it’s a boring plot DNF all the way. Same for if I don’t like a writing style. I usually read more slowly if I don’t like a book and I’m not willing to spend that much time on a book I don’t like. I don’t get guilty about DNFing books.

3. The end of the year is coming and you’re so close, but so far away on your Goodreads reading challenge. Do you try to catch up and how?

It depends on how behind I am. I don’t think I’d get any more than 30 books behind. In this case, I’d see how much of the gap I can close through reading a manga, comic book, or graphic novel. It’s so much less time consuming to try to close the gap that way. I mean, it’s like the reason I’m so ahead on my own Goodreads challenge. Because I read a bunch of manhwa and manga. I think I’d legitimately try to catch up.

4. The covers of a series you love do. not. match. How do you cope?

I don’t really buy that many books so I haven’t really had to deal with it. I think I’d be okay with it though! It’s the stuff on the inside of the book that counts! Besides, if I got all of the books really cheap and they didn’t match, I think I’d be more proud of the fact that I found the books secondhand than actually making them match. #frugal

5. Everyone and their mother loves a book you really don’t like. Who do you bond with over shared feelings?

I read negative reviews on Goodreads and rant to my friends. I have a friend that’s even harder to please with a good book than I am so I’d probably rant to him. I’d angry rant my way through a review. Then I’d probably sizzle down and relax until the next time someone mentions the book.

6. You’re reading a book and you are about to start crying in public. How do you deal?

It depends on how much I’d cry. If it’s like a little bit of crying, I think I’d just wipe the tear away and try not to cry. If it makes me sob, I’d probably just cry. It’s not like I’m going to see any of these people ever again. That’s usually my rationale for doing anything dumb in public. I don’t usually cry all that much when it comes to books. I have to really connect with a character and the book for that to happen.

7. A sequel of a book you loved just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot from the prior novel. Will you re-read the book? Skip the sequel? Try to find a synopsis on Goodreads?

The third option! I’ll either find a spoilery review on Goodreads or I’ll try to find a plot summary on Shmoop or something. I know that for popular series, it’s really easy to find a full length summary so that’s what I’d do. If I can’t find the summary, I’d usually go ahead and start the sequel and hope that the details come back to me.

8. You do not want anyone. ANYONE. borrowing your books. How do you politely tell people nope when they ask?

People don’t usually ask me to borrow books because even if I’m one of the biggest booklovers in my grade, it’s not like public knowledge that I am. I probably would tell them that I don’t like lending books because they generally come back to me in bad shape. Honesty is the best policy!

9. You’ve picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over your reading slump?

Just stop reading! Usually if I’m not in a reading mood, I’m in the mood to do something else. A while back I just wasn’t reading. I was instead, in the mood to watch a Korean drama. So I finished watching that, let the feels die down, and voila! I was in the mood to read. Usually a short break will remedy my slump.

10. There are so many new books coming out that you’re dying to read! How many do you actually buy?

None. Maybe one or two depending on what author is publishing. Two weeks ago, the Top Ten Tuesday post topic was Auto-buy authors! Everything I said there applies here. I’m just not that big of a book buyer because I don’t have the money to. I’m pretty sure that will change as soon as I get a job though XD I usually wait and see if the library gets a copy of it a few months after it’s release and read it then.

11. After you’ve bought the new books you can’t wait to get to, how long do they sit on your shelf before you get to them?

A very long time. The only time I can think of where I immediately read it after I bought the book was back when I read The Heroes of Olympus series. I’ve said that I’m a mood reader so that definitely applies here. Librarying a book (yes it’s a verb now) usually has a better chance of me reading it soon after I get it. I’d say that a book will be on my shelf unread anywhere from a week to over a year.

I TAG ~

  • Everybody that wants to do this tag! Go ahead if you want!

The sad thing is that I totally thought that I’d tag people for this but then I opened it up to edit it aaaand decided not to. I’m lazy, sue me. >.< Well, that’s the end of the tag! I hope you guys enjoyed learning a little more about some of my reading habits!

  1. Hahaha we’re the same when it comes to TBR! I usually use Goodreads just to archive all the recommendations people make, but I’m definitely a mood reader too! If I set myself a book to read, it’ll feel like a chore and I’ll probably dread reading it.

  2. Ooo I am 100% mood reader. I get confused when people tell me they have a list they have to read and they can’t deviate from it – it sounds awful and my flakey mind just would not be able to handle it. I don’t tend to read books right after I read them either, unless they were a sequel to something I am dying to finish.

  3. This is so PERFECT! I am almost scared to answer some of these. I am a total book hoarder, which I am trying to overcome, and I am about to do a bit of the book cull here very soon. It is time I was honest on what I am and am not going to read.

  4. I also use Goodreads when I can’t decide what to read. Your lucky your ahead of your Goodreads challenge! I still have 18 books to go XD I don’t cry much in books either but with All The Bright Places, I was a mess. Enjoyed reading your answers and thanks for doing the tag! 🙂

  5. I’ve completed my Goodreads challenge! Now it’s just my goal to read more so I can say that it’s not only because of the copious amounts of manhwa and manga I’ve read XD
I haven’t read that one but I do have it from the library so I’m very excited to read it soon!

  6. Aw, thanks!
I think it’s great that you’re trying to overcome it. I feel like a lot of people try to hoard books and portray it as a really good thing when sometimes it can be problematic? Good luck on overcoming it!
Also, I hope I’m not being too verbal or insensitive with this, so I apologize in advance if I was >.<

  7. Lucky you! Since I last posted that comment, I have 17 more books to go! I set myself a big challenge because I was disappointed on not reading as many books as I could and not finding many good reads last year. Have fun reading all the Manga! Looking forward to hearing what you think of it 🙂
